OH. WOW.
I think I am in love.

Could you please tell me where in DLP the challenge was issued? I would like to read all about it...

Ruby T.

JBern replied:

If you go onto DLP and look at the general discussion thread you can look at the challenge for next years awards thread started by me and the other thread about 33% of the votes cast thread by Bioplague.   The challenge itself was me getting tired of being panned for being a popular author by people on the site.   I took the two most vocal and challenged them to a competition.   One accepted.

I hope after reading what amounts to a bunch of harping and whining, some by myself that it does not lower your opinion of me.~Jim

I like this start. This suspence is great and I hope that you don't reveal the whole reason to quickly. One request: Please don't give up on Bungle in the Jungle. It is still my favorite fic by you.

JBern replied:

I'd never give up on Bungle or it's planned sequel.~Jim

Wowow, keep it comming! Highly amusing in the potential trouble (esp. with Hermione, along the lines: were did you get a Timeturner, there's no other possibility...).
Yes, this is extra nice!

JBern replied:

Oh there are plenty of possibilites.   Next chapter our hero believes he is a seer until someone puts him on the right path...~Jim

This is pretty interesting so far. Has Harry become possessed by James or something? That's the only person coming to mind that was a good Chaser right now...

Yes, a fresh angle on the Harry's back from the future and is being possessed by his future self. I look forward to the next installments. This wouldn't be a 'speed writing' type of contest, would it?

JBern replied:

Sort of.   Next chapter our hero believes he is a seer until someone sets him on the right path.~Jim

Now you arent very nice......How could you take up another story which is just as, if not more so, intriguing as the others you've written?? I mean as it is most of us here are waiting for the next chapter in the other 2 and here you go springing a surprise on us like this.

Good Show!!

JBern replied:

Thanks.   I really meant to use this story in between when TFtCD concludes and as I draft the sequel to Bungle.   My own pride and arrogance forced me to release it this early.   Chapter 30 of Darkness should be out shortly.   It's about 75% done.~Jim

Not bad, this is shaping up to be another good read. One glaring mistake I spotted was your misspelling of 'Moony' - lose the extra E, please. Other than that I could detect no problems.

I'm looking forward to see how this will continue. There are so many stories where emphasis is put on the fact that Harry is not James - what if he was?

update soon!

Quizer

JBern replied:

You wouldn't believe how much crap I've caught over that extra 'e' in Moony.   Oh there were plenty of problems.   Just visit the thread on DLP and you'll see how roughly 2600 words have never been so dissected before.

The original bunny took hold in my mind when I wondered wouldn't it be ironic if his father really had saved him at the lake?

Dear Jim, This is a great beginning. I already have questions. How old is Harry in his mind? Why is he thinking older than 13? How soon can we get more of this story? (I know I am impatient!) I really like your prickly Harry. He is irreverent and blunt. I really enjoy that in Bungle in the Jungle and I am sure I will like it in this story. Thanks so much for writing. I look forward to updates on both of these stories. pms

JBern replied:

Some answers coming next chapter.   Probably more questions too, but Harry starts mistakenly believing that he has the gift of sight.~Jim

Hmmm... You know, I don't think I've seen this particular plot device before. At least, I can't recall if it has been. Curious choice too...

Nice. I've thought myself about the idea of Harry actually some how being James. I'll be very interested to see how you do it. And I like first person stories.

Given the usual interpretations of what happened when LV visited Godric's Hollow uninvited, it seems more likely Harry would have part of his Mum in him protecting him. But that's based on DD's opinions. If it had been something to do with James instead, it makes for lots of interesting ideas. Like no good reason to be at the Dursleys.

Is Harry talking to Remus at the Hogs Head in canon? I don't remember it. I tend to prefer AUs that diverge significantly rather than ride along the same old rails and was wondering if that established divergence or not. Hmmm... I see you've filed it under Harry/Fleur. Since this is starting at the end of PoA, I can see major divergence in GoF. Cool. :-)

Speaking of Remus, doesn't the corniness of the Wizarding World almost guarantee that he has a twin named Romulus running around somewhere? As I recall, practically nothing of Remus' childhood is known.

I also especially like the additional detail and rules for Quidditch. The way you do it adds a lot of verisimilitude to the story. They do not, however, seem very canon-like--they make too much sense. You're risking turning Quidditch into a plausible game. ;-)

I only noticed a couple beta-esque things:

"At breakfast, we learned that the Minister has removed the Dementors from the school grounds." -> "...Minister had removed..."

Mooney -> Moony

All in all, an excellent start. Thanks for sharing it with us.

JBern replied:

I appreciate the lengthy review and the beta type comments.   I approached this bunny with two ideas in mind.   What if his father really did save him at the lake?   The other was Lily left blood wards, Voldemort left Parseltongue and the connection, what did James leave?

I have a completely different GoF in mind.   More and different champions.   Many more tasks and different looks into the characterizations of characters you think you know.

Many authors use Soccer (Football) in their mind when they write Quidditch.   I use Hockey or Lacrosse when I think about it.   Plus chasing isn't really talked about much in canon or fanon for that matter.

Thanks again.   Next chapter in 5 days.   Harry mistakenly believes he has the gift of true sight!   Until someone sets him straight.~Jim
