I have to say if I heard what came out of the Hat's mouth I would be looking for the nearest fireplace. That is one foul hat.
Not quite sure why you felt you needed to make it's personality so nasty. Maybe so that Dumbledore wouldn't suspect something, I don't know.
The revelation of Harry James Potter on the Map was an excellent scene. It, along with the morphing of the names prior to it settling on that created a horror, at least it did when I read it. That thought of suddenly learning you are not who you think you are, or that you are but there is someone else also in your headi sterrifying.
I agree with you on Dobby. His 'help' damn near got Harry killed. Hard to be all lovey dovey with someone that offers that kind of help. I think all the ill treatment he received from the Malfoys damaged his brain. That's what I would go with.

I wish the hat was like that in canon. It's fricking hilarious!

You know... As you said, I'd be suspicious... I was always partial to the Malfoy's ordering Dobby to pretend to be free to get the skinny on Harry and his activities... An un-noticeable spy as such...
JBern replied:
That is an interesting theory. It'd make a good short fic, but I can't see Lucius allowing himself to be manhandled intentionally by a house elf.

The sorting hat was a bit of fun, but a little over-the-top with the profanities. It was like giving the hat a totally different character, and the whole reason behind it was so vague it left me with a 'what? no, wait...why???' kind of feeling. I still want to see where you're going with this. It's interesting.
JBern replied:
The Hat is over the top and hopefully you continued on with the story and enjoyed it.~Jim

Yeaurgh. This is the third time I've tried to read this. Every time, I make it as far as "lung butter", and just have to stop. Sorry dude, too gross for me. Have a nice write.

To each his own. I hope you find something you enjoy on this site or others.~Jim

I love this sorting hat! It's rude, crude and obnoxious! Hilarious!!!

Ohhh...man...the hat...that was hilarious =D
Who knew that something that spends so much time around 11 year olds would be so foul-mouthed and angry? (though it is understandable given it's situation...)
As for the Harry-James dilemma...pure genius. I wonder what Harry-James's reaction will be when certain memories of mummy resurface... :P
JBern replied:
Glad you enjoyed the chance I took with the Sorting Hat. My apologies for the delay in response. As you can see, I'm playing catch up.~Jim

Your sorting hat is quite amusing..especially the way "he" talks to Dumbledore. This fanfic has a very interesting basis, I'm keen to see where it is going to go.
JBern replied:
Thanks for the review. Chapter 11 has just been posted. I hope you have continued to enjoy the story.~Jim

Hmmm, your version of the sorting hat is VERY different! I'm not sure it's an accurate portrayal since the sorting ceremony is too different from this to not leak out in the sorting ceremony. Does this make sense? Actually, I like how you've done this, and it's really original.
JBern replied:
Thanks for the compliments. I'm glad you prize originality.~Jim

Well I just about pissed myself laughing at the sorting hat. So I liked it. I always think that old people/things should either be nuts, nice or bastards

Well don't drink beverages and read my story. It could be hazardous to your garments or your monitor or keyboard.~Jim

Just re-reading as I wait for book 7 (3 days, 7 hours, 13 minutes) and your a/n caught my eye. When I re-read COS in preparation for DH, my inner conspiracy theorist came out and suggested that Dobby may have been acting on Malfoy's orders all throught the book. Made me see the story in a totally different light
JBern replied:
Well, hope you enjoyed DH more than I did. Glad my story got you thinking.~Jim

LOL! The Sorting-Hat with a seriously bad attitude... and with a mouth (or whatever) to go with it! I especially liked the crack about Dumbledore and McGonagal "proving" things to themselves.
The idea that (a piece of) James -- and maybe only James -- survived inside baby-Harry's head is a novell one (I must admit I hope it's a matter of "shared accomedations)... can't wait to see were you take it. Does Dumbledore know -- or suspect? How about Voldemort? A soon-to-be 4th year with knowledge of auror-level spells, should be interesting... maybe he even can use some magic on his relatives, if the monitoring-spells reads him as an adult -- and maybe even an auror. In any case, James should have some dirt on the Dursleys...
I'm also looking forward to Harry's upcomming relationship with Fleur; a 25-30 y/o stuck inside the body of a 14 y/o -- perhaps together with a 14 y/o -- trying to woo a 17 y/o veela... she should at least be surprised by his maturity -- and perhaps his knowledge of the female body.
Keep up the great work.
(Yes, I know you've already have more chapters up, but I just had to comment on the Sorting-Hat.)
JBern replied:
Hopefully the image of DD and MM isn't burned into your mind...
HJ may never know whether he is Harry or James, although if his wand crosses Voldemort's wand, we may get an answer or two (or more questions!). Jim

My, this hat is fresh! Never met a bowl of soapy water, did it? Maybe it is the one with Tourette's? Looking forward to see what happens next. Spiking the tournament sounds like a good idea...
Cheers!

Glad you like the Hat. It's one of my more entertaining characterizations thus far.~Jim

Hmm interesting fanfic I think I like it so far. Not sure though about the langauge that the sorting house was using. Were you trying to make a point with the sorting hat or was it just to make the story as different from the originals as you possibly could?
JBern replied:
If you look under my section of the ffa forums for this story, you'll see a bit of discussion about the Hat. I'll summarize real quick. Godric created it in the 10th century. It still basically has the mindset of a 10th century man. Think about the level of sophistication of a tenth century mind especially one crafted in Godric's image by his hand. The Godric I present in this story liked women, drinking, and fighting. Possibly all at the same time! Now imagine the Hat created in that image and it can't do any of that. It gets to look into the minds of 11 yr olds and sing everyone a song. How bitter would you be?
Anyway, I like to take chances with characterizations. It's the only way I see to really make your story stand out when compared to others.

This a good chapter. Sad that Harry would have his father memmory's, It sad that Harry doubt who is. I would think that it not hard to guess it's Harry's body with James memmory's. I disagree with the sorting hat, I would think that he be bored but he is a big asshole. I would hold off on my option about tri wizard tournment and changed you plan to do, I just hope that making it for a better story and not because you think your better then the author.

The question of identity may never be answered to HJP's satisfaction. In the end, he is who he is and there isn't much that whining or angsting can change.~Jim

Excellent work. Loved your version of Dobby and
the Sorting hat. Yeah, a reworked tournament
would be a good idea. With all the time they
had you could really leave in the original tests
without crowding the number of events.

Well now chapter 3 is up! Hurry you must read and review soon! The opening line of the chapter should be enjoyable...~Jim
