Great chapter! This and its prequel are my favorite stories that you've posted here on fanficauthors.net! Its nice to finally know what the Daemon Blood "gave" Harry as its little gift. Nice to know that all Harry has to do is Bite Voldemort to kill him....after the cup is destroyed. And truly it makes suprising sense, considering the Basilisk bit him, now he can bite back eh?! :D

Anyway Excellent storyline/arc and execution of the First Person perspective!

JBern replied:

Glad you enjoy it!   Well, if he gets that close to Voldemort than Voldy is making some serious gaffes.

Technically, it's 2nd person present tense, but I appreciate the compliments just the same.~Jim

Nice work, fun scenes all around and Hack's new coat rocks! Keep up the good work and please update soon.

JBern replied:

Thanks.   It'll probably be 2 or 3 weeks depending on how quickly I can polish off Darkness.~Jim

Haha, excellent. Again, you come up with some of the best original ideas in your stories. Voldefilch was great.

Wow you killed McGonagall, I wonder why you did that. Well now who are you going to get to teach her class?

JBern replied:

I did it because I could.   Horcruxes should be protected.   They should be dangerous and potentially lethal.

In the original version, I butchered Pomfrey in addition to McKitty.   She got spared, but IP82 had the wonderful idea that she shouldn't be uber cool under pressure fanon nurse.

Harry's not concerned about who's teaching.   If he needs to transfigure a desk into a pig, he's got problems.

In Hermione's defense, her ideas are good ones--so good, in fact, that Harry already knows them. But she's got no way of knowing that.

Loved the entire battle with Filch. And the Harry/Luna scene. And Harry rendering the entire DADA class speechless.

A couple of minor things I'd probably have changed were I betaing--"that the old Harry Potter never had before" strikes me as a teensy bit redundant--but nothing I can fault you or Mr. St. Vines for.

Overall, an excellent chapter. As usual.

JBern replied:

Yeah.   The point of the Hr convo is that she's several days late and several dollars short.   I hope that it was the best Harry versus Filch you've ever seen!

Well despite what Brain, oh sorry, Brian thinks, I fer one am dead chuffed that yer taking yer time ter get these chappy's right. I mean, we can't have yer spewin' off miss spelling words left right and center, now could we? I gotta wonder where he is hidin', makin' comments ter yeh, didn't yeh come up with all the evil we are reading in the first place? Geez, what a gormless wonder.

JBern replied:

Thanks for the review.   Look for some special Hack and Hagrid bonding in the near future (no slash I promise).   I think they would make a dynamic duo!   Next chapter coming soon.~Jim

hi great update, my daughter and i try to guess who will die both of us missed. he is with luna out in the open? i thought that was going to a secret? lav with ron? why? loved luna's jokes very well done! kill on

JBern replied:

Why yes it is catch up on all my review replies night here.   Harry was just eating breakfast with her.   She's a known friend and he could use it to throw it in Ron's face at the time.   Update schedule is post Darkness 41 (once back from editing), write Lie chapter 8 (finally writing some Harry and Fleur interation - sparks will fly, but not in a good way) and then TML 4.

You and your daughter both read my work?   I'm honored.~Jim

PS - I forgot to ask, who did you two think was going to die?

Quizer posted a comment on Sunday 28th October 2007 3:11am

Wow, another action-packed chapter! Too bad about McGonagall, I always liked her character, but I'm not going to cry about her.

Poor Hermione, doesn't have a clue, does she? Trying to teach Harry Animagus and Apparition... Seeing more of their interaction should be entertaining.

Harry finally meeting Luna again was good, too. I'm looking forward to see more interaction there, too.

Great to see that Harry will at least have a little time to do research, skill training and rune carving. He can use a little ace in the hole or two, what with the pace the encounters keep coming at him.

I really enjoyed this chapter! Looking forward to the next!

JBern replied:

I always run into your long reviews after 3 hours of replying to others.   I wanted my versions of Horcruxes to not go out so easily.   I want them to be a true test of Harry and those around him.

Wait until you see what I have in store for him next... (there's a subtle tease)

Update schedule is Darkness finale (final edits and then post), Lie 8 (finally getting back to that story) and then TML 4.   Harry has a party to attend at the Brazilian Embassy.   What could go wrong?~Jim

YEEHA!!!!!!

Excellent and awesome story there, Jim! Of course, you know that I am one of your biggest fans (and not just physically, lol).

Great fight scene between Harry and Voldie-filch - and the aftermath therein was excellent as well. I loved Harry's little conversation with Hermione AND Ron (oooh, I had nothing to do with it, oooh! Yeah, Ron, and my name is Brittany Spears!).

His reaction to Snape in Defense Class was priceless. ::snickers:: Yeah... I don't blame him for going off to find some real training!

Oh, btw, I love Kwan. I'm sure I've mentioned that, oh, a thousand times.

Aiiya!

JBern replied:

Good to hear form one of my biggest fans.   I'll remember that when I start  publishing original stories.  Glad you enjoyed the chapter.   I aim to please.   Kwan is second only in my heart to Hack in this story.   Most anyone can write a mean spirited hitwizard bodyguard, but how many can give you a troll sidekick?   Next chapter is coming soon.   I have to get back to Harry and Fleur in The Lie I've Lived first.   Sparks will fly, but not in a good way.~Jim

Always a fun read dude, love your stuff.

JBern replied:

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the chapter.   Next one is coming after chapter 8 of Lie.~Jim

Excellent chapter, very meaty. Still light on the emotions, but great stuff none the less. McGonnagal's death surprised and mildly saddened me. Hack's "trophy"...LOL. "Superman" Filch...that got a grin. Luna's pretending, right? I keep forgetting. Definitely need to get her and Harry into a broom closet. Nice quip about the broom he gave her. More jokes than I can give approval to without matching your word count, really. Thanks for writing, and please, MOAR! :)

JBern replied:

Luna thinks she's pretending, but the easiest person to lie to is always yourself.   Glad you enjoyed the ride, sorry for my delayed reply.   Next chapter coming soon after Lie chapter 8 and the posting of the Darkness finale.~Jim

Last I noted - not only are we not being charged for this and your other wonderful stories, there isn't even a tip jar; so being peevish cause a chapter didn't materialize according to some schedule is doltish. Apologies for his missing gray matter.

Personally - Great chapter, I will miss McGonagall, despite her flaws and inconsistencies she is one of the most likeable and admirable of canon characters. The end of Argus and his familiar was appropriate, actually the best such scene that I have seen, and once tanned, is wonderful as a Troll formal cape.

thanks for your always intriguing stories

warm regards

JBern replied:

Thanks for this and all your other reviews.   Sorry for the delay in my reply.   Things continue to be busy and I'm now at the end of a 3 hour stretch of replying to the backlog of reviews.   Of course you know I'm just doing this to build up practice for when I start publishing my own stories, but hopefully they will intrigue you enough to purchase them.

Capes really impress the female Trolls!   Look for Hack and Hagrid buddy time coming soon!

Next up is posting Darkness Finale, writing Lie 8 and then back to this one.~Jim

ps - if you are actually interested in my original stuff, there's a thread under my section in the forum that discusses this.~Jim

Hehe gotta love when you can call a reviewer butt nugget.

I am interested in how Hermione and Ron are trying to pass the summer off, but then again I can see how Dumbledore could easily manipulate them.

That said, Hermione's statements to Ginny, are just barely on the safe side of concern for Harry, as opposed to her own personal gain.

Ron never had a chance to defend himself, but then again hus presence at the Quidditch camp sort of says it all, doesn't it?

I liked the Snape in this chapter, and Hack as always is good for at least one laugh. It is surprising how McGonagall went down, but Filch's death seems about par for the course.

Thanks for writing,
Matt

JBern replied:

As you can see it's catch up on all my reviews night and the time interval between these resposnes shows I've been at it for a while now (closing in on 3.5 hours), but I take pride in replying to every single review.

You've probably had several reviewers that you wanted to call butt nugget I'll bet!

Most people write a manipulative Dumbledore who somehow all the sudden begins making gaffs in Harry's 5th -7th year.   I want mine to stand out as a real piece of work that Harry will always be questioning.   Hopefully, I can make the others pale in comparisson!

Hermione doesn't get very good treatment in my stories, which no doubt irks you, but I try to be consistent in my depiction of her.   In this one you can see that she was the friend who's loyalty to Harry was used and abused by Dumbledore.   I'm taking a different route in The Lie I've Lived.   You'll see...

Anyway, the Darkness Finale gets posted as soon as I get it back from editing, Lie chapter 8 is finally ready to be written, and then back to this one.

Thanks again for the review.   Best of luck on your works as well.~Jim

Love the story man. Thanks for ignoring the butt nugget. I would much rather have to wait for a good chapter than get a bad one and wonder what the hell happened. Keep up the good work!!

JBern replied:

Well thanks for the review.   Sorry for the delay in my reply.   Next chapter is coming soon, but I first have to write Lie chapter 8.~Jim

Update whenever you feel like it. I'll be here. It's always, always worth the wait. You've painted so many glorious mental images in this chapter that I'm reeling. Luna's sweeping, Hack's new clothes, i mean...Damn!

Thank you for motivating my ISP's continuing existence.

Miles Hance posted a comment on Sunday 28th October 2007 1:01am

good to hear this...Brian character is NOT speaking for you. I was a little worried. this chapter is actually better in my opinion than chapter 2. although mcgonnagal dies, which i feel so-so about. if the story can work without her, cool.

you need to do more to put snape in his place, and violently. he was the one that told voldemort the prophecy. can he get his just desserts before this story ends?

other than that, your darkness story, after reading it again and trying to wrap my head around it is quite good, but the lie i've lived has real promise even with a slow start. please continue on that.

more power to you

JBern replied:

After I post the Darkness finale, I'll start writing Lie chapter 8.   Look for Snape to be punished often in that story.   In TML it'll be a bit different, they'll be uneasy allies.   TML 4 after Lie 8.   I'm pretty eager to start writing the Harry and Fleur interation in Lie.

Thanks for the review.   I hope I continue to impress.~Jim
